54th and 55th Mass. Regiment Artwork
    Definition:
In March, 1863, 179,000 ex-slaves were recruited as soldiers into the 54th and 55th Massachusetts regiment. The historical significance for this portrayal was to capture the noteworthy men in that era and most importantly to honor the first all black regiment to serve in the civil war. Frederick Douglass was instrumental in the recruitment of the soldiers that made up these two battalion. Mr. William H. Carney was presented the Medal of Honor for saving the American flag and planting it on the parapet and holding it while his team of troops charged on Fort Wagner. The depiction of these events is presented vividly in the movie “GLORY”.
