This picture details the life of an individual who was born into poverty but rises from that state in an attempt to become a “success” story. The painting brilliantly juxtaposes his life in the projects with the more elegant lifestyle that he currently finds himself in. Yet at the same time, JPalmer definably shows that even with success, we are still products of our environment. The first phase of the artwork shows a man who was born in the slums and projects, living, struggling and coping with the violence, drugs and other negativities presented in those communities. Yet he gets that golden chance to change his lifestyle and make a better outcome for himself. However, we see how the stresses of his new found wealth and success plague him as he contemplates engaging in some of the same activities he previously indulged in. This piece reassuringly shows us that success is not measured by the things we acquire, but by the way we live to make ourselves worthy citizens in our society.
